Woodturning
New in 2025, FSA is adding woodturning to the program. Woodturning is craft that uses a lathe and hand tools to create a symmetrical shape while the wood is rapidly turning on the axis of the lathe. In our program, we will be teaching students of all levels of experience how to create wooden pens and small bowls. Each workshop will produce a finished piece that gives the students confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

Fun Facts About Woodturning:
While there is little evidence to tell exactly how far back woodturning was invented, because wooden items tended to rot and there is very little evidence, historians agree that the earliest woodturning began around the sixth or seventh century BC (Before Christ). This is due to depictions in ancient drawings. The earliest bow lathe was found in an Egyptian tomb in 1300 BC. Early lathe workers held cutting tools with their feet while they operated the lathe with their hands.
