Ceramics
Ceramic art is a visual art form that involves creating objects from clay or other ceramic materials, shaping them, and then firing them to harden. Our ceramics program is the largest and most well attended program at FSA. We offer six classes and three open studios per week as well as a multitude of workshops throughout each month. While all of our classes are open to any level of experience, we offer a beginner’s class strictly for people with little to no experience working with clay. Our fully equipped Ceramics Studio features, 12 electric wheels, 6 kilns (3 electric, 2 gas firing to Cone 10, 1 Raku), 1 slab rollers, spray booth, clay extruder, and large work surfaces for hand-building
We currently employ six ceramics instructors, including Kody Barnes, the Department Head. Kody is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program as well as the growth of the program. Kody has contributed so much to our program since he joined the team in July of 2024. Each instructor is qualified in education and experience to teach you the skills you need to grow into a professional artist, if that is your desire.
We offer nine types of Cone 10 clay including the following: Bee Mix, Black Mountain, Long Beach, Porcelain, Rod’s Bod, Seaside, SOBTG, Soldate 60, and Tecate Gold. Prices are per 25lb bag.

Fun Facts About Ceramics:
Ceramics is among the oldest art forms. The oldest artifact ever found was the Venus of Dolní Věstonice, a 29,000 year old female figure. Because of the sediment found in the clay (such as mammoth ivory, bone fragments, etc.) archeologists say she dates back to the Paleolithic Era about 28,000 BCE (before common era). Among the earliest artists of ceramics and pottery were the people of China, Japan and Eastern Russia.
